Reading Recovery

Betty Gitz, Reading Recovery Teacher Leader

What is Reading Recovery
Reading Recovery is an early, short-term intervention program for young readers who are experiencing difficulty in their first year of reading instruction. It is based upon the assumption that intensive, high quality help during the early years of schooling is the most productive investment of resources. The early years, which set the stage for later learning, are particularly critical for children who are at risk of failure.

Developed by New Zealand educator, Dr. Marie M. Clay, Reading Recovery serves the lowest achieving readers in a first grade class. Children receive individual daily lessons from a specially trained teacher each day for an average of 12-20 weeks.

The goal of Reading Recovery is for children to develop effective reading and writing strategies in order to work within an average range of classroom performance.
