School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)
The Iowa Behavioral Alliance, an initiative of the Iowa Department of Education, has committed itself to working with AEAs in the promotion and training of School-Wide Positive Behavior Supports (PBS). It operates with the primary aim that all Iowa children and youth are healthy and socially competent, all Iowa children and youth succeed in school, and are prepared for productive adulthood, and all youth have the benefit of safe and supportive families, schools, and communities.
The main logic is that behavior support in schools begins by investing in building a positive social culture and that this “culture of competence” is supported through defining behavioral expectations, teaching behavioral expectations, monitoring and rewarding appropriate behavior, providing corrective consequences for behavioral errors, and having an information-based decision making model in place. School-wide positive behavior support is a set of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior.
