Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is a school-wide program designed to:

  • Prevent bullying by establishing a school climate of respect & caring.
  • Train school staff to intervene immediately when bullying occurs.
  • Teach skills to students who are bystanders when bullying occurs.

An initial Bully/Victim Questionnaire for students in grades 3+ establishes a baseline measurement of bullying behaviors; annual administration provides ongoing data on effectiveness of the program. A Coordinating Committee of 8-12 persons is trained who, in turn, trains the school staff and directs the program. Core components are implemented including:

  • School-Wide rules, +/- consequences, supervision plan, ongoing staff discussion groups.
  • Classroom level meetings to build community and teach skills to students.
  • Individual interventions for students who bully and who are bullied, parent involvement.
  • Community efforts to increase support of anti-bullying messages and strategies.
